This week for me has been about taking back control of my home and work space. I have had little time this summer keeping up on my housework and I haven't had much time to devote to my furniture painting. I am working on getting a permit to sell by appointment only, out of my detached garage in the fall. Wish me luck with this, I hope it works out because I don't want to have a retail space right now. I really want to keep my overhead low and I would rather meet clients in my studio turned store front rather than my home. I have a very large basement that I turned into another studio for smaller dressers, desks, and tables. The basement is not a walkout so the larger pieces will have to be in the garage studio.

But my garage right now is UGLY, at least it is pretty clean now though. I plan to curtain off the front portion of my garage {with the door}, paint the floor and walls white, and add white bead board to the ceiling. It will be rustic but it should be a clean background for colorful furniture. My deadline to finish this is the middle of September, do you think I can do this? Do you think I am crazy to try to make my garage look nice and sell out of?

 Since I am showing you my garage, I might as well show you my work pile. I have a ton of projects I     am ready and excited to work on.
{More in the basement studio.}

My confession is.... I hate painting chairs, can you tell? I have them all lined up and stacked, ready to be worked on and I can't bring myself to do it. I think the reason is, I don't have a sprayer.  It is on my wish list, but right now I don't want to spend the money on a sprayer, I would rather buy more furniture.
 Also, I actually really love the process of hand painting pieces. But painting chairs by hand is a huge pain, I am not a fan. Is this weird? I love, I mean really love, painting tables, dressers {my favorite}, and buffets but I hate painting chairs.
Glad I got that off my chest!

  1. How exciting! I think it's a great idea. You've got some really great pieces in there - I wish I could come and shop!
    I hate painting chairs too - I inevitably end up with drips on the legs no matter how hard I try to avoid it. :)

  3. I think that it is possible to get it done on time and a great idea to sell in your garage. I wish I could do that at my home but living in the woods makes it tough.

  4. I think it's a great idea to sell from your garage. The rustic, neutral background will work great with the furniture. I hope all goes well for you.

  5. Use what you got, girlfriend! You have the space - use it, make it yours, get your name out and off you go. This would be my plan if I would someday should I choose to persue this course as well. I would love to see your space when its done for ideas!

  6. Not crazy at all. Very smart of you! If I had a detached studio area, I would do the same thing. What a great a great way to have the best of both worlds. The demands of a retail store seem like they would be a bit overwhelming. And I'm so with you on the chair thing!

    Best of luck on getting your studio done in time. I'm sure you'll pull it off.

  7. Ok, you're my kind of girl! A) my garage looks like that, too. Actually, it's worse. I have a narrow path to walk through and have to pull pieces onto the driveway to paint (which isn't happening much now in the 100+ weather). B) I HATE painting chairs, too. I'd like a sprayer... or a big dipping vat!!

  8. Hi Alison~

    I think your ideas for your garage turned studio sound lovely, and I am rooting for you all the way as you work toward finishing it by mid-September! :) And oh, I so understand hating to paint chairs! I have many of them waiting for me, but thankfully my husband found a way to hang them up from the garage rafters, because it just isn't getting done fast! {I agree on wanting a sprayer, too!}

    You have such a fun blog, and I will be back again soon to visit!

    Blessings,

    Lets get together soon :)

  11. I hate painting chairs too. It's so tedious! I think the garage idea is great, and I think you will do it and do it well indeed! If you can see it in your head, the work is half done :) I can't wait to see how it turns out!
