I bought this victorian dresser before I left for vacation. It is not the silhouette I normally go for but I knew it had potential to be fun and different.
The finish was bad, a ton of water spots, I did not want to tackle refinishing it. I sanded the piece, sprayed on Kilz clean start. For the body and drawers of the dresser I painted three coats of Benjamin Moores Simply White in Aura {primer added in, lots of primer going on this piece!}. I distressed the edges and added two coats of wax to finish. I sprayed the original knobs a glossy black, their shape was cute but I wanted a high contrast. I have been doing this a lot lately. I am going through a high contrast phase.
For the top I added three coats of a black enamel paint in satin. I wanted the top to be very durable, so I went with the enamel paint. On it's own I think the enamel paint will hold up very well but I am going to add a wipe on poly {I haven't done this yet, before someone purchases it I will}.
Very fancy schmancy, not my usual. I was thinking it would make a great media center or buffet for someone. If you like it, this will be in the shop soon.
Speaking of the new shop/studio. It is coming along, I am not only working on painting it and getting the space worked out, but the appropriate permits are taking longer than I thought so I will get items in there for sale as soon as I can!

ReplyDeleteBlessings,

OmiGOSH, what a STUNNING transformation!! I could NEVER part with this!!
ReplyDeleteI love this piece. I like high contrast, especially black and white!
ReplyDeleteGORGEOUS!! You did a fantastic job with that piece!
ReplyDeletethis one is definitely very different for you but oh so glamorous and pretty! it's always fun to try different things. there have been plenty of pieces i have painted that i would never put in my own house, but still love them anyhow!
ReplyDeleteOf all the painted furniture I see on people's blogs, I like yours the best. I love the colors you choose and the knobs, etc. If I may ask, what brand of
ReplyDeleteblack enamel paint and wipe on poly do you use? Is black enamel different from latex? I'd like to paint some of my furniture but I'm afraid I don't know what to use. How do you ever part with your finished pieces? How often do you go to thrift shops and/or hunting for furniture?
Beautiful! Do you use a sprayer to paint? If so, what kind of sprayer do you use? I have several pieces that I need to paint, and a buffet is one of them. Your pieces are beautiful! Jackie
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh you guys are so sweet to me tonight! I will go out to the studio and find out exactly what enamel I use, I can't remember off the top of my head but I know for sure it is one that I bought at either Lowes or Freddies and yes it is oil based which I don't normally use because I hate cleaning my nice brushes after using an oil based paint and I hate cleaning up my sink from the paint that has come off the brush with oil based paint on it. If I am going to use an enamel or any other oil based paint I use a cheapy chip paint brush not one of my Purdy's {oh, I love my Purdy's}.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I don't have a sprayer, maybe one day but I prefer to take my time and use a brush, it is fun for me.
I thrift when I have time, I am guess typically 3 days a week? When the kids are in school almost every day. Right now I have no more room for any inventory so I am on a buying freeze. Plus I am getting custom requests and I need space in the studio for this. Thank you ladies you are my inspiration!
love the black top! I may have to do this!
ReplyDeleteI love it. Now I really want to do one too!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! The black on top is a nice surprise.
ReplyDeletePretty pretty pretty!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love this piece! Thanks for sharing it at the Open House party.
ReplyDeletexo,
Sherry
i ask this everywhere, but rarely ever get an answer.
ReplyDeletelet me start by saying, the painted piece is very nice!
heres the BUT, and it is a big one...why?
it was a beatiful piece, with age to it, and survival, yet you took what survived and devalued it:(
the hardware, if original, would have really added to the piece, but you changed that too.
